After the Christmas rush has died down and everything has gone back to normal, what is there to do in Rotterdam in Winter? Visiting during the colder months is a perfect way to explore the city without the usual summer rush. Don’t worry about getting a table in your favourite bar or restaurants, browse the sale bargains in your own time and there is no queueing to visit popular tourist attractions. Here are some of our favourite things to do in Rotterdam in Winter.
Admire the Architecture on a walking tour
Enjoy a walking tour of Rotterdam at any time of the year and they will point out some of the most impressive architecture along the way. Pick a dry day and dress warmly before setting out on a walk exploring the city and admiring the finest Dutch architecture in the country. Rotterdam is home to an architectural experiment called the Cube Houses, which happen to be one of the most interesting architectural features of the city. Designed by Piet Blom in 1984 this series of 38 homes comprised of pillars and cubes at a 45-degree angle and are one of the main attractions in the city. One of the homes is open to explore for a small fee. They’re quite small so can be crowded inside – but not during winter!
Enjoy The Hipster Coffee Scene
There is nothing quite like a hot cup of coffee and a sweet treat in a cosy coffee shop on a cold day. Luckily, there is an established hipster coffee scene in Rotterdam with something from everyone whether you like an americano or a double soy latte with extra foam. One of our favourite and most distinctive cafes in Rotterdam, Op Het Dak is a combination of a rooftop farm, an urban garden, and a terrace café. It’s less than 10 minutes from PREMIER SUITES Rotterdam so you won’t have far to go for your morning pick me up. Enjoy the History and Culture of Rotterdam
Rotterdam is a city filled with history with museums, galleries and exhibitions on every corner. There is something to suit all ages and interests here. The Museumpark in Rotterdam is home to two stunning art museums, Boijmans van Beuningen and Kunsthal Rotterdam. You can learn about the famous port of Rotterdam at the Maritime Museum. Two of the largest cultural events in the Netherlands also take place in Rotterdam during the winter: the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) and Art Rotterdam Week. Time your visit around these two fantastic events and make the most of winter in Rotterdam.
Drink & Dine
If your idea of a great city break involves plenty of food and drink, Rotterdam is the perfect spot for you. You’ll find local and international food and drink on every corner and we’re renowned for quality ingredients. One of the best spots to dine is the famous Markthall. Not only is the external food hall impressive architecturally, the inside is fully ‘tiled’ with panels of glass that houses apartments where locals live. There are interesting themes and murals on all of the walls and the ceiling. You’ll find a fantastic selection of foods so you can all eat different cuisines at the same table. If you’re lucky enough to be here around New Year, try some delicious Oliballen.
Make Yourself at Home
By nature, we don’t spend as much time outside during winter. This is the same for vacations or city breaks.
