One for the Amsterdam bucket list is the fantastic Madame Tussauds on Dam Square. Here are some of the highlights of Amsterdam’s most fun and interactive attraction.

The History of Madame Tussauds

In 1761 Madame Tussaud was born Maria Grosholtz in Strasbourg in France. Her fascination and curiosity about art and the human body led to her first model of the famous author and philosopher Francois Voltaire at just 16 years of age. In 1793, Marie and her mother were imprisoned in Paris during the French Revolution. To show her allegiance to the Revolution, she was forced to make death masks of executed nobles and her former employers the King & Queen. After the revolution ended, Marie inherited Dr Philippe Curtius’ wax exhibition and married Francois Tussaud, changing her name.

In 1802, Marie and her family took the exhibition on tour and by 1835 she had settled down in Baker Street, London and opened a museum. One of the main attractions of her museum was the Chamber of Horrors where gruesome relics of the French Revolution were displayed. Marie Tussaud died in 1850 but her legacy lives on. Millions of people have passed through the doors of the world-famous Madame Tussauds since they first opened over 200 years ago and it continues to be one of Amsterdam & London’s top tourist attractions.
