Plantin-Moretus House-Workshop Museum Complex
Plantin-Moretus House was a printing and publishing house in the 16th Century and is the only museum on the UNESCO list. Here, alongside Venice and Paris were three of the strongholds of Renaissance & Baroque printing in Europe. Christophe Plantin and Jan Moretus set up this prestigious printing company which was also Plantin’s home, workshop, library, garden and shop. Contained within are some of the most formidable art, exquisite age-old machinery, typesets, books, globes and maps. Plantin not only published books in local languages but also in a wide variety of ancient and foreign languages including, Aramaic, Hebrew, Old Syriac, Arabic, Latin, Greek and others. It is considered the most prolific printing and publishing house in Europe in the late 16th century.
The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier
Maison Guitte, close to Middleheim, is listed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites as part of the Architectural Work of Le Corbusier, as an outstanding contribution to the modern movement. It’s one of 17 sites in 7 countries, all of which are recognised and protected by this honour. Unfortunately, the building is a private residence and cannot be accessed by the public. Le Corbusier (1887–1965) was one of the world’s most influential twentieth-century architects. Maison Guitte is his only remaining work in Belgium and although unassuming, is a beloved piece of our heritage.
Belfries of Belgium and France
There are a total of 55 Belfries on the UNESCO list, each with something unique and individual. Built between the 11th and 17th centuries, the unique style showcases the Roman, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles of architecture. Antwerp Belfry stands atop the Cathedral of Our Lady and paired with the Stadhuis (city hall) form the second UNESCO site in Antwerp. The tallest Belfry in Flanders, this formidable and beautiful building stands at 123m and recently underwent an extensive renovation. The church by itself is a visual treat too with pictures by world-famous painter Peter Park Rubens, whose hometown was Antwerp. The belfry was added to the 11th-century church between the years 1532 & 1521. The cathedral is about 10 minute’s walk from our serviced apartments in Antwerp.
Historic Centre of Bruges
You might be surprised to learn that the entire historic centre of Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site itself. With its cobbled streets and quirky architecture, it’s not surprising that the city is one of the most popular in Europe for tourists and it’s important to protect its character. Enjoy a walk along the beautiful canals or hop on a tour boat and see the city from another perspective. There are museums, cafes, shops and so much more, many independently owned and operated. The Belfry of Bruges is also on the list and from the top, you can enjoy one of the most unspoiled views of the city and surroundings. Made even more famous after featuring in the blockbuster movie In Bruges, the city is such a special part of Belgium, whose architecture, character and charm is loved by locals and visitors.
World Heritage Sites in Brussels
Brussels is home to three World Heritage Sites: La Grand-Place, Stoclet House, and the Major Town Houses of the architect Victor Horta. Start your visit with a try to La Grand-Place, also known as the Grote Markt, surrounded by impressive guild houses and several other buildings of note, including the Town Hall and the King’s House. It’s easily one of the most beautiful places in Belgium, possibly the world. Similar to Maison Guitte, Stoclet House is a private residence which you cannot enter but you can admire it from the outside. It’s considered one of Brussels’ most impressive architectural examples. Don’t miss the four Major Town Houses of the architect Victor Horta which are particularly impressive thanks to their open plan, use of light, and seamless joining of curved lines within their structure and decoration.
