Taste of Local Culture in Newcastle

Newcastle, or to give it it’s formal title – Newcastle Upon Tyne, is most well-known for its industrial and shipbuilding heritage, world-renowned brown ale, vibrant nightlife and of course our distinctive ‘Geordie’ accent. If you are planning a trip, you’ll want to get the best of the city while immersing yourself in our rich culture and history while still getting the best of our buzzing modern city. Here are some of the best cultural places to visit on your trip:

Discovery Museum

If you want to learn about the history of Newcastle and Tyneside or discover all about life here, the Discovery Museum is a great place to start. The museum is bursting with static and interactive exhibitions, exciting for all ages, making it a great place for a family day out or for a Sunday of exploring. The subject of the exhibitions varies from our maritime history and innovative science & technology right through to military history and the ever-changing fashion through the eras. Your free entry will give you access to one of the most popular exhibitions, Turbinia, the world’s first steam-powered turbine engine.

Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

The Baltic centre was once a flour mill which has been converted now to be one of the biggest contemporary art venues in the world. The building is the perfect example of how our industrial past has been adapted and reformed into something beautiful, while retaining its cultural significance. The centre hosts a huge variety of modern and contemporary art and they don’t have any permanent exhibitions so each time you visit will be new and exciting. They often host family days and workshops so you can get as involved as you like on your visit.

Angel of the North

One of the most iconic visual representations of Newcastle has to be the majestic Angel of the North. The contemporary sculpture, designed by Antony Gormley, is located in Gateshead – just 10 minutes’ drive from PREMIER SUITES Newcastle and its definitely one for the bucket list. The magnificent sculpture is 20 metres tall, with wings measuring 54 metres across and was erected so that she would welcome visitors to Newcastle and become one of our most iconic and well-known landmarks.

Newcastle United

If you’re a big fan of the beautiful game and want to visit the home of Newcastle United, you can arrange a tour of their home ground – St James’ Park. They have a variety of tours to choose from, from the classic tour, one which includes a pub lunch and even a heli-tour of the area and stadium! The tour lets you access all areas of the grounds including the players-only areas like the changing rooms and hospitality area. The knowledgeable guides are all lifelong fans of the Magpies and are more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
