What is the Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

Edinburgh Festival Fringe is an over-the-top festival of creativity and one of the greatest celebrations of art and culture in all of Europe. The Fringe started life when eight theatre companies turned up uninvited to the inaugural Edinburgh International Festival in 1947, taking over smaller, lesser-known venues not in use by the film festival. Now, 70+ years later the festival showcases the very best talent in filmmaking rooted in a local Scottish context whilst embracing the international diversity of creativity. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival spans every genre of live performance, including theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children’s shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions, and events.

What’s new in 2024?

The newly relaunched Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) has announced a collaboration with the renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe for 2024 and it promises to be one of the best so far. The festival has unveiled new venues including non-traditional cinema spaces at Summerhall and dozens of others. This year’s EIFF programme will include Out of Competition films including international premieres, UK premieres and additional world premieres sitting alongside the 10 world-premiere feature films competing for The Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence.

The Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence is a £50,000 award given to a single filmmaker which was recently announced as part of the collaboration. 10 world-premiere feature films will compete for the cash prize, to be determined by audience vote. There will also be a short film competition with a cash prize of £15,000. Submissions are still open for applications, and we can’t wait to see what the talented and creative people of Edinburgh and beyond come up with!

Where can I catch Fringe Performances?

Anyone can take part in the Fringe as it’s a fully accessible platform for creativity and often madness! New spaces have opened this year to facilitate even more performance. Spaces in Summerhall and others at the heart of the Fringe will serve as unique and unusual EIFF venues. Audience engagement with Edinburgh’s summer festivals is easier than ever before. This year’s cinema hub will be the Cameo Cinema on Home Street, one of the original venues for EIFF and home to some of its most iconic moments, including a speech from Orson Welles as part of the Festival in 1953. Fringe venues can be anywhere from theatres and concert halls to repurposed spaces like bars, parks, buses and shipping containers. There are dozens of free, ticketless street events bringing colour and vibrancy to the streets of Edinburgh throughout the festival.

What’s on for Fridge 2024?

Fringe events could be anywhere. The full programme of events is available on their official website and is updated regularly with new and exciting events across all disciplines. The historic Royal Mile and Mound Precinct are transformed into huge street performance spaces where hundreds of street artists mix with thousands of festivalgoers. It’s sure to be the place to be this August.
