History of Tall Ships
The first Tall Ships Race took place in 1956 from Torbay, UK to Lisbon, Portugal, and it was organised by the Sail Training International Race Committee (STRC). It was organised as a final celebration for the world’s remaining Class A Tall Ships, a fleet of which is a magnificent sight. The ships were thought to be close to retirement, which was proved to be a happy mistake as they look forward to their Platinum anniversary in 2026. The event was so successful that they decided to make it a biennial happening. Sail Training International (STI) was formed in early 2002 and was granted charitable status the following year.
About Tall Ships Race
Since the first Tall Ships Regatta over 60 years ago, it has been a successful regular event since then. The aim is to encourage the art of sailing particularly for 16–25-year-olds, fostering a passion and healthy competition between teams from across the world. Sail Training International are the only company in the world who organise this unique style of sail training for Tall Ships. They start planning their routes, which are usually European routes, up to four years in advance, carefully curating a route with historic and cultural significance. Ports in selected cities bid to become hosts, a huge honour for the city which brings huge crowds to the area. The arrival of the Tall Ships is usually paired with cultural activities in the host port.
Tall Ships Race Route 2022
This year the route includes a return to four host ports that have hosted a total of 16 Tall Ships Races and Regattas so far. The majestic ships will set sail from Esbjerg, Denmark, south through the North Sea to Harlingen, Netherlands, as the first part of this exciting race. Following this they will enjoy a leisurely Cruise-in-Company leg south to our beautiful city of Antwerp, Belgium, enjoying spectacular coastal sailing. Race Two will take the fleet from Antwerp, back north through the North Sea to Aalborg, Denmark, where they will enjoy a fantastic final celebration before setting off for home. Port Cities enjoy an increase in tourism and support for local businesses coinciding with the arrival of the fleet.
