Sightseeing in Antwerp – your essential guide

On your trip to Belgium’s stylish second city, you’ll want to fit as much as possible in without wasting time trying to find your way around or deciding what to do or where to eat. To make your sightseeing trip easier, we’ve done the hard work for you. Here is our essential guide to seeing the best that Antwerp has to offer without the hassle.

How to get around

First thing first, decide how you want to get around. You could easily walk to all of our biggest attractions but walking around a city you’re not familiar with can be confusing and very tiring! We recommend taking a tour bus to save yourself time and effort. Instead of walking blindly, not knowing what the significance of the beautiful buildings are, your tour guide will give a running commentary so you’ll learn a lot while staying warm and dry, away from our unpredictable weather. You can get on and off the bus as many times as you want, stopping to visit exactly what you came here to see.

What to see

One of the cities most impressive buildings is Antwerp’s Grand Place (Grote Markt). It contains the town hall and numerous Guild Houses, set against the beauty of Antwerp’s Old Town. Immediately behind the town hall, in the Gildekamersstraat, a former guild house has been turned into a Folk Museum devoted to the many traditional arts and crafts found in the Antwerp area. It’s a great insight into life here. No trip to Antwerp would be complete without a visit to the former home of one of our most famous residents, Peter Paul Rubens. Following the death of the artist, his home was used as a prison and fell into disrepair. Since then, it has been meticulously restored and furnished in the style of the time he was alive. This includes displaying some of his original work and that of his students.

Where to Eat

Slightly off the beaten track, you’ll find the most beautiful café with the friendliest staff called Pascalino. They have a great selection of dishes, a mixture of Belgian cuisine and all of the usual European favourites. A favourite on the menu is their delicious made-to-order Belgian waffles made in the traditional manner, so they are light and crispy rather than their chewy food-stall alternative. If you need some alcoholic refreshment or want to sample some fine Belgian beer, visit Maurice and Dietrich which faces the main square. It is well known for its selection of great beers, the friendly service and the bar food here is especially good. If the weather is good enough, take advantage of the heated outdoor area and spend a couple of hours people watching.
