Liverpool Through The Eyes Of A Local

We’ve told you enough times why Liverpool is a great place to visit but the city is more than a weekend getaway. Locals and long term guests enjoy a different side to Liverpool that weekenders might not have time to appreciate. We enjoy fantastic nightlife and pub culture off the beaten track, incredible scenery and the best community we could hope for. We enjoy a packed schedule of world-class events, rival football clubs, brilliant beaches and the best sense of humour from our colourful locals; our city is one of a kind.

Albert Dock

Albert Dock was planned and started development in 1841 but work had to cease due to wars. Construction and up to date planning restarted in the 1980s transforming the area into a centre for cultural activities and events. The dock reopened in 1988 and continues to draw locals and tourists alike thanks to a number of diverse offerings that include Tate Liverpool, Museum of Liverpool, Dazzle Ferry and the Beatles Story. Liverpool Dock is a vibrant place full of art, music and culinary offerings. It’s a great place to enjoy an al fresco lunch or drink with friends. It’s truly the jewel in Liverpool’s crown.

Hope Street

Visitors come from far and wide to admire the architecture of the city, something locals take for granted on their daily commute. Liverpool has a beautiful Georgian Quarter, filled with elegant houses and leafy streets. At the heart of it is the picture-perfect Hope street flanked on either end by the city’s two cathedrals. The Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King on one end and Liverpool Anglican Cathedral where you can climb to the top of the Vestey Tower and enjoy panoramic views of the city on the other. Hope Street was voted Best Street in the UK and with the award-winning theatre, art deco concert hall along with a wide range of independent restaurants and bars, it’s no surprise.

Eat Like a Local

There are plenty of chain restaurants and household names on the streets of Liverpool, but true foodies and locals will go a little further to find delicious, exotic, international and unusual places to dine. The Georgian Quarter is packed with lovely hidden gems like Puschka, a charming European dining experience with a focus on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. At Liverpool One Bridewell in Campbell Square, you can taste your way through several regional brews and order a traditional Liverpool dish, Scouse, enjoying it from the ‘comfort’ of a converted jail cell. Enjoy a bite on the go from Mrs Danvers Bakery, a Lovely little cafe situated in one of the Three Graces, Liverpool’s iconic landmarks.

Day Trips from Liverpool

Locals who are lucky enough to live in the bustling city centre often take day trips to neighbouring towns and cities, just 15-minutes from the city by car or cab, you’ll find the beautiful Crosby Beach, perfect for a morning run or an evening stroll. Enjoy artist Antony Gormley’s stunning exhibition ‘Another Place’, an ominous collection of 100 iron men occupying a mile-and-a-half stretch of beach. It’s especially beautiful at night with shadows and silhouettes heightening the atmosphere. Other great day trips within an hour of the city include Formby, Southport, Chester Zoo and New Brighton.

Shopping in Liverpool

We’re well known as trendsetters and fashion capital, so it stands to reason that you’ll find many flagship stores on our streets. Alternative shopping districts like Bold Street or the Met Quarter are slightly off the main drag, but locals and visitors love to ramble through the quirky shops and bargain hunt. Cavern Walks off Mathew Street (by the famous Cavern Club) is not somewhere you would stumble across by accident but it’s worth finding if you love unique shopping and independent places to eat and drink. Of course, you’ll find all your high street and high-end favourites in Liverpool One, the biggest name in shopping this side of the Mersey.
