FX Buckey Dublin
FX Buckley, known to locals as FXB, is an institution in Dublin. From humble beginnings as a neighbourhood butcher, the brand has grown to encompass groceries, restaurants, gastropubs and more. Six generations of Buckleys have owned and managed the brand since it began in 1660. The butchers expanded in the 1900s when owner Francis Buckley owned several butchers in Dublin City Centre including a flagship location on Moore Street. 1922 was the year Buckley’s Butchers became immortalized in print, with two mentions in James Joyce’s masterpiece, Ulysses. Pembroke Street was the first FX Buckleys restaurant which opened in 1987 and is less than 5-minutes’ walk from our Dublin accommodation. Other Dublin locations for FXB are Monkstown, Dame Street and Parkgate Street among others.
What makes a good Steak?
Writing about FX Buckley, the editors of the review started their summary simply: “100% Irish – 100% quality.” That is what makes FX Buckley stand out from the crowd. They won this 6th place honour for the quality and craftsmanship of their meat and the expert way it is prepared. FXB started as a butcher so the chefs know exactly the right way to select and cook their cuts of meat for optimum flavour and quality. The owners and chefs commented on how they source Angus and Hereford beef, with “steak cuts from heifers only are grazed for at least two years on the finest quality Irish grass, which means that there’s lots of time for a good layer of marbling to build up – for that extra special flavour”.
The Sides
Often in a steakhouse, the meat is good, but the sides let the meal down. In FXB, their sides are as carefully and delicately prepared as their mains, and it shows. A highlight of any steak dinner are the chips. FXBs hand cut, twice fried, beef dripping chips are the perfect side for a juicy steak. Other fantastic sides include creamy mashed potato with spring onion or organic leaf salad, all delicious depending on your taste. While the meat is flavoursome on its own, they serve a choice of flavour-enhancing sauces to compliment the perfectly cooked meat. Choose from pepper sauce, garlic butter, Bearnaise or bone marrow jus. They also have vegetarian and pescatarian options for non-meat lovers.
What makes a good Steakhouse?
Aside from good food, which FX Buckley has in abundance, the mark of a good steakhouse is its atmosphere. The Restaurant, as well as the butcher shop attached, have an excellent reputation for guest and customer service. Every need is thought of before you ask, and their team are only too happy to recommend cuts of meat or pair drinks with your meal. As well as the main restaurant, the Buckley Collection is a group of steakhouses, gastro pubs, bars, and a grocery store so the business has a full spectrum of customer service experience. The atmosphere is suitably casual for a steakhouse with some special touches like branded steak knives and quality cloth napkins.
