Dublin Awarded Best Weekend Destination In The World

What makes a great weekend break? A mixture of culture, history, shopping, dining, and a great atmosphere are the perfect combination for a successful weekend break and Dublin has each of these in abundance. In fact, Dublin has been named the Best Weekend Destination in the World by a leading American travel magazine. The city was awarded the prestigious title by Global Traveler at its 11th annual Leisure Lifestyle Awards in Philadelphia beating fantastic European locations like Rome and Paris who came in second and third. Here are some of the must-do things to do in Dublin on your weekend break.

History and Heritage

A great way to get to know a place is to peek into its past. Dublin has a rich and varied history, much of which you wouldn’t know anything about unless you look for it. Learn more about our archaeological past in the museums and galleries in the city. Our military and revolutionary history is on display in GPO Museum and the brilliant Kilmainham Gaol, where you’ll also learn a little about our social history. Step back in time and see how people of the past lived in the Litte Museum of Dublin and 14 Henrietta Street. When you walk through the streets make sure to look above eye level to marvel at the beautiful heritage architecture especially in places like Great Georges Street and around St. Stephens Green.

Culture

Ireland is famous for our culture and people travel from across the world to enjoy our céad míle fáilte for themselves. You’ll find a warm and welcoming atmosphere on Dublin streets and nowhere is warmer than in the pub. From live music and dancing to friendly locals enjoying an afternoon pint, you’ll feel right at home. Culture is abundant on our events scene too, from world-class theatre and music to Gaelic and other sports played throughout the year. Dublin parks and beaches are very special too. On sunny days you’ll find people from all walks of life enjoying the warm weather, playing outdoor games and enjoying picnics.

Dining In Dublin

Dublin’s dining scene is one of the most diverse and exciting in Europe. While our national dishes like stew, bacon & cabbage, etc get much attention from visitors, it’s our high-quality produce that makes all of our food stand out. Ireland has some of the best beef in the world and paired with fresh, locally grown veg, potatoes, dairy and preserves, it doesn’t get any better. We have a huge selection of international cuisines here too with many nationalities represented. You’ll Italian, Thai, Indian, Spanish, Pakistani, Greek and so many more in the city centre. You’ll always find a little of what you fancy.

Shopping in Dublin

Dublin is a mecca for shoppers. You’ll find everything and anything on our high streets from world-renowned designers to locally crafted goods. You’ll find the most high-end shops on Grafton Street which is a hive of shoppers and buskers. Across town, you’ll find high-street favourites like H&M, Zara and Penneys on Henry Street. There are plenty of independent shops and markets around Georges Street and South William Street so you can take something unique home with you. A short distance from the city, there are shopping centres like Liffey Valley and Dundrum which also have cinemas and food courts.

Choose Dublin as your next weekend getaway destination and you won’t be disappointed. There is so much to do here, a weekend is not enough but it’s a good place to start.  We look forward to welcoming you to our serviced apartment accommodation in Dublin.
