What are the Commonwealth Games?
Often referred to as the Friendly Games, the Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The founding Commonwealth members were Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom but the event has grown to include 54 nations since its inception. Driven and upheld by the values of humanity, equality and destiny, the Games aim to unite the Commonwealth through a display of skill in sport with friendly competition at its core. The aim is to inspire athletes to compete in the spirit of friendship and fair play. The event was first held in 1930, and with the exception of 1942 and 1946 has taken place every four years since then.
For an action-packed 11 days, Birmingham will be home to all manner of athletes and visitors from across the world. This year, the games include Aquatics, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Bowls, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Rugby 7s, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling. Among other games, there will be 8 days of cricket, 8 days of gymnastics and 7 days of athletics and a marathon. The summer of 2022 is set to be a fantastic one for lovers of sport!
This year, for the first in Commonwealth Games history, the competition schedule features more medal events for women than men. It also features a fully integrated para-sports programme making it the most inclusive event so far. There will be a record 286 sessions across 19 different sports and details for each can be found on the Birmingham 2022 website.
