Birmingham to Bristol link to Commonwealth games

We are delighted to see the return of the Commonwealth Games in 2022. Birmingham has been chosen as the host of this year’s games and luckily for guests and locals, Bristol is a short hop on by road or public transport. The Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games, often referred to as the Friendly Games, is an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations, countries originally under the British rule throughout the world. The games were first held in 1930, and have taken place every four years since then, aside from a couple of hiccups. The event is renowned for inspiring athletes to compete in the spirit of friendship and fair play.

The Commonwealth Games comprises of 16 core sports and a further 4 core para-sports that are competed at every games. All sports officially recognised and approved by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). This includes a huge variety of sports from diving and wrestling, table tennis and judo.

After a couple of difficult years, the Commonwealth Games are sure to bring a must-needed feeling of excitement and pride to Britain in 2022.  This exciting event is scheduled to take place between Thursday 28th July to Monday 8th August 2022 with events across a number of stadiums and locations in Birmingham. 

Birmingham to Bristol by Train

If you’re planning to travel between Bristol and Birmingham for the games, it’s a very easy route. It will take approximately 70 minutes by car and just under 80 minutes by train, a perfect commute time. There are around 52 trains travelling 77 miles (124 km) between these two destinations daily. Once you’re on board, you won’t need to worry about making any changes along the way as direct trains are available. The shortest journey time is 1h 18m on the fastest services. On CrossCountry trains, you can take advantage of free WiFi, a catering service and more so make yourself at home.

Train Tickets

As always, you will save money on your train tickets by buying your tickets in advance. tickets are usually cheaper during quieter, off-peak times on weekdays and weekends. if you have a Railcard, you can save up to a third on eligible journeys for a whole year, including during the Games. Take advantage of our discounted rates for students and OAP tickets. Keep up to date with train times and plan your journey in advance for the best possible experience. Tickets start from just £21.70 and run regularly between 5am and 10pm. The closest station in Bristol is Temple Meads and the direct train will take you to Birmingham New Street.

 Birmingham to Bristol by Road

Driving directly between Birmingham and Bristol is approximately 98.2 miles with a drive time of 70 minutes in low traffic and 1 hr 35 mins in normal traffic. If you’re planning a road trip between the two cities, there are plenty of places to stop along the way to stretch your legs or to see a little more of our beautiful country. Enjoy stops in Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon, Telford, Warwick, Gloucester, Dudley, Swindon, Bourton-on-the-Water, Worcester, and Hereford and top places to visit like Warwick Castle and Cadbury World, or the fantastic National Exhibition Centre. Bath is the most popular city on the route — it’s 2 hours from Birmingham and less than an hour from Bristol.
