9 Must Know Facts When Visiting Liverpool City For The First Time

If it’s your first time to visit our iconic city on England’s west coast, you’ll want to brush up on your facts about Liverpool before you go. Although they are a huge part of the city’s musical heritage, we’re so much more than ‘The Home of the Beatles’! We’ve put together a list of interesting facts about Liverpool so you can impress your friends and family with your knowledge.

  1. Liverpool’s Waterfront is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, putting us in the same category as the famous Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China! In the 18th & 19th Centuries, the port was a major site for the mass movement of people, including slaves and immigrants from Northern Europe to America. It’s still one of the busiest and most beautiful parts of the city.
  2. Liverpool has one of the most impressive collections of Museums and Galleries in the whole UK second only in number to London. You can visit the World Museum, Merseyside Maritime Museum, The International Slavery Museum and The Tate Liverpool which are all within a short walk from your ideal accommodation in Liverpool, PREMIER SUITES. Most of these attractions are free to enter.
  3. Outside of London, Liverpool has the highest number of Grade II listed buildings. The city has 2,500 listed buildings and 250 public monuments, making us a fantastic place for a historic walking tour. The oldest Grade I listed building is the Tudor Manor House, Speke Hall.
  4. Liverpool had the first even steam-powered passenger railway line in the whole world! It was built in the 1830s and ran from Liverpool to Manchester. A member of parliament was killed shortly after it opened in the first-ever railway accident. He left his carriage, walking along the track to get a look at the approaching Duke of Wellingtons train, and didn’t notice the oncoming train.
  5. Liverpool holds its very own Guinness World Record for being the capital of pop music, for obvious reasons! More artists with a Liverpool origin have had a number one hit than from any other location. And of course, Liverpudlian legends The Beatles changed the face of popular music. Sir Paul McCartney set up the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts in 1996 so that record is set to continue!
  6. Liverpool has two local teams, Liverpool Football Club (LFC) and Everton and between them, they have accumulated 28 League championships, five European Cups, three UEFA Cups, one Cup Winners Cup, 11 FA Cups, and six League Cups. The most recent of which was LFCs defeat of Tottenham Hotspurs in the 2019 Champions league. We are officially the best footballing town in the UK!
  7. Scouse is an accent and dialect closely associated with the city of Liverpool and is an unoffensive way to refer to Liverpudlians. It’s also a type of stew which was eaten by Liverpudlians living in poverty before the 1900s. Ingredients include lamb or beef, cabbage, carrot, potatoes and onion and although it doesn’t look the most appetising, believe us it really is!
  8. Liverpool has a thriving film industry. Films shot here include The Hunt For Red October, The 51st State, The Parole Officer and Letter To Brezhnev. The city was used as a location for more than 140 films last year and has doubled for Moscow, Dublin, Paris and amazingly, even Venice.
  9. Liverpool was the first city in the world to build a library that lent books to the public. The city was also home to the first School of Tropical Medicine, the first American Consul and the very first School for the Blind – proves that we have some very forward-thinking and innovative residents!
