Here are our favourite things to do this Winter in Rotterdam.
1. Shopping
Shopping in Rotterdam is an experience in itself. Our trendy streets are filled with designer boutiques, high-street favourites and plenty of alternative and vintage shops if you’re looking for something truly unique. Take a stroll through the Koopgoot and the Lijnbaan shopping districts or hop onto the Metro for 15-minutes to visit the impressive mall Alexandrium. We have some excellent vintage shops dotted across the city too, perfect for finding something very special as a gift to yourself. Not only is retail therapy good for the soul, you’ll also stay out of the cold!
2. Dining
Dining is an all-year experience but especially good in winter as you’ll get to sample the delicious festive Dutch treats only found at this time of the year. This year, pop into one of the closest attractions to PREMIER SUITES Rotterdam – Markthal. The impressive horseshoe-shaped building is one of the largest indoor market halls in Europe and doubles as a residence and office block. Inside you’ll find a combination of sweet treats, healthy meals, international restaurants and smaller stalls selling all kinds of Dutch delicacies. Make sure to grab some warm traditional Dutch Oliebollen to enjoy in your suite later.
3. Christmas Market
Winter revolves around Christmas and luckily we take the festive season very seriously in Rotterdam. The biggest Christmas Market in The Netherlands is less than 20-minutes by tram in Dordrecht and it’s definitely worth the trip. Here you’ll find more than 200 stalls selling a mixture of gift ideas, handmade crafts, and festive food & drink to keep you fuelled. You could easily spend a whole day enjoying the cosy atmosphere and listening to the live Christmas carols being sung by live choirs. Don’t forget to grab a Glühwein to warm yourself up as you go.
4. Ice Skating
Is there any better winter activity than Ice Skating? This year Ice Skating is back in Ijsvrij Park Festival at the Euromast Park, our own personal Winter Wonderland just 20-minutes’ walk from Central Station. The festive atmosphere is great here, especially when accompanied by festive music and delicious hot chocolate. Don’t worry about renting skates, everything is provided for you upon arrival. If you’re lucky enough to be here over a weekend they hold a silent disco Friday nights, a family day on Saturdays and a live music programme on Sundays.
5. International Film Festival
Winter is the ideal time to catch up on some of the movies you may have missed during the warmer months. Here in Rotterdam, our winter activities for January include our fantastic International Film Festival IFFR. From 22nd Jan to 2nd Feb you’ll have a huge variety of high- quality, carefully selected fiction and documentary feature films, short films and media art to choose from, giving you a fascinating insight into the minds of filmmakers from all backgrounds. There are over 500-films being shown, each with its own unique story and message; no Hollywood Blockbusters here!
