5 ways to experience Amsterdam like a local

Amsterdam with is canals and its lovely shops is one of the most popular destinations in the world when it comes to a city trip. Everyone knows the famous Anne Frank House, the impressive Rijksmuseum and the gorgeous Vondelpark. But of course there are also lots of other hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Not too sure where to start? In our latest blog post we will let you in on a few secrets of how to experience Amsterdam like a local!

Food

Let’s start with one of the most important things when going on a city trip: food! Make sure to avoid the crowdy restaurants in the touristic city centre and go for a more local restaurant in Amsterdam. Fuoco Vivo is one of the best places in the Netherlands to go for a pizza. It is situated close to the Rozengracht and offers a variety of choice in fresh pizza. More in the mood for tapas? Then we can definitely recommend Boca’s. There are two restaurants of Boca’s in Amsterdam and both are rather small so it’s best to book your table in advance.

Coffee

When visiting Amsterdam for the first time you will probably also check out the cosy ‘9 streets’ with its small shops and tiny bakeries. There are lots of great places there where you can enjoy a coffee, but we would like to give you a tip for a more local coffee spot: Beter & Leuk. This small restaurant is located in Amsterdam East and offers breakfast, high tea, coffee and lunch. A plus? They serve both vegan and gluten free cakes!

Shopping

Amsterdam is also known as the shopping Walhalla of the Netherlands! The city offers many different famous shopping areas such as the P.C. Hooftstraat, the Kalverstraat & the Leidsestraat. Here you can find a few of the most well-known shopping areas of Amsterdam. Are you looking for a more unique shopping experience? Then we can recommend the one of the flea markets that Amsterdam has to offer. Three of our favourite ones are the Dapper market, the IJ-Hallen market and the Waterlooplein market.

Visit

So next up – time for some culture! Already tired of the touristy museums? Not to worry, we have some great tips for you about some less-known exhibits. The first one we would like to suggest to you is the Brillenmuseum. This special museum showcases all kinds of glasses from the past 700 years. The collection is showcased in a house which dates back to 1620 which makes the visit extra special. Another tip we can offer you is Electric Ladyland. This museum is the only one in the world that showcases fluorescent art. Definitely something you have never seen before!

Going Out

Last but not least we would like to give you a few great tips about the nightlife in Amsterdam. Of course you can choose to go out at the famous Leidseplein, but there are also other places in Amsterdam where you can build a great party! Pacific Amsterdam is a hotspot in Amsterdam North where you can enjoy a bite to eat, a drink or where you can dance until the early morning hours. A must for all party people amongst us.
