5 family-friendly activities in Amsterdam

Although Amsterdam is best known for its coffee shops, red-light district and romantic canal tours, there is another side to it for families. Amsterdam is a popular spot for family trips and children’s activities in Amsterdam are not hard to come by. From children’s museums to exciting bike rides across the city, you’d need to live here for a year to get through all of the child-friendly activities in the city. PREMIER SUITES Amsterdam offers the ideal family accommodation in Amsterdam with more space, storage, and facilities than a traditional hotel stay. Contact us or visit our website to learn more.

A Bike Trip in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a very walkable city, even for little legs. The centre of the city is packed with things to do, all within a short distance from each other. If you want to get around quicker, consider hiring a bike. We’re well known as a bike-friendly city, and you’ll frequently see children or entire families being transported on a cargo bike. These special bikes are designed with children’s safety in mind with seatbelts and harnesses as standard. You can even hire one in the shape of a Dutch clog for novelty! There are dozens of bike rental companies to hire from in and around Amsterdam.

Nemo Science Museum

Forget about a missing Disney clown fish, Nemo is a science museum in Amsterdam and one of the most popular attractions for children and families. The multi-floor, interactive museum is a perfect spot to bring children and keep them entertained while they learn a little on their break from school. There are five floors of exhibitions, experiments and workshops contained within the striking building whose roof can be seen from miles away. They have several fascinating exhibitions with themes such as humankind, construction, energy, machines and everyday science. It’s a great day out for the whole family and sure to keep little ones of all ages entertained.

Amsterdam Bos

If the weather is good, tire out your little ones with a visit to Amsterdam Bos, one of the largest parks in the area. In fact, it’s three times larger than Central Park in New York. This vast green space is perfect for family fun and games, a stroll to admire the wildlife or a family picnic. The Bos boasts a wide range of lunch cafes and restaurants with stunning views of the forest and the waterside. Make reservations for a boat excursion through the waterways of the Amsterdam Bos, enjoy a family activity or buy souvenirs all from the visitors’ centre. Enjoy a visit to Ridammerhoeve, a biodynamic goat farm at the centre of the park where visitors are welcome to look around the farm and have a chat with the staff while they work. The Fun Forest climbing park has nine different climbing courses at various heights, varying in difficulty. Great fun for young and old alike!

Madame Tussauds

While it may not suit children of all ages, most little ones will find a fun, exciting day out in Madame Tussauds Amsterdam. Located in the heart of the city on Dam Square, thousands of visitors flock to this important Amsterdam landmark every day. Enjoy realistic models of many of your favourite celebrities and characters immortalised in wax. The wax works are grouped into three floors with themes such as Holland’s Golden Age, the Music Zone, TV Studio Backstage, and Sports Gallery. You can meet and take pictures of famous faces such as Rembrandt, David Bowie, Albert Einstein, Anne Frank and Barack Obama as well as many cartoon characters. You can take hilarious pictures for your family album. Read more in our blog about Madame Tussauds.

Artis Zoo

Zoos in any city are always a family favourite. Artis is the Amsterdam zoo, located on the east side of the city. From the moment you pass through the ornate, golden eagle adorned gates, you’re into a world of discovery. The zoo was built in 1838 and still boasts a 19th-century décor and welcome. It contains over 6000 animals both local and exotic, with over 700 species represented. Within the grounds of the zoo, and free to explore for all visitors, you’ll find an aquarium, a planetarium, botanical gardens, and two museums devoted to zoology and geology. If you’re lucky enough, you might get to see some of the many species of babies born every year in the zoo through their breeding programme.
