5 Best Short Day Trips From Glasgow

Glasgow is a city buzzing with excitement and culture. There is enough to do in Glasgow to occupy you for months but if you fancy a day trip from Glasgow, we’ve put together a list of our top 5. Our serviced apartments in Glasgow are an ideal place to stay to explore the city and a perfect base to return to after a day exploring what the rest of Scotland has to offer. We’ve made sure all of our recommended spots are less than 90-minutes from your perfect accommodation in Glasgow, PREMIER SUITES.

1. Loch Lomond

The famous Loch Ness is slightly too far away for a short day trip but regardless of its infamy, it’s not the best of Scotland’s Lochs. Loch is the Scottish Gaelic word for Lake and closeby Loch Lomond is one of the most spectacular lakes in Scotland. This freshwater lake stretches for over 30kms, it’s long and not very wide with 30 or so islands dotted along it, a rarity on the British Isles. Water sports are allowed on the lake so if you were the sporty type you could enjoy kayaking, motor boating, and more. You could also enjoy a walking & hiking route or a cycle around part of the 39-mile circumference of the lake.

2. The Trossachs

The Trossachs is the surrounding highland area which encompasses Loch Lomond. The National Park is wild and rugged and about as Scottish as you can get so close to Glasgow. The area is full of lochs and woodland and is an excellent spot for hiking, camping and enjoying the spectacular Scottish Highlands. The Trossachs were made famous by the poet Walter Scott when he describes the lochs and scenery in his poem ‘The Lady on the Lake’ and not much has changed since the poem was written. While there you may come across the majestic red deer navigating the many mountains and lakes that make up the 720 sq miles of woodland.

3. The Ayrshire Coast

From mountains to coastline next with a day trip to the stunning Ayrshire Coast. This is the countryside where famous Scottish poet Robert Burns took inspiration for his poetry, amongst the rugged cliffs and wild landscape of the beautiful Scottish coastline. The area includes the villages, islands, coastal walks and the quintessential Scottish town with a unique history and heritage, Kilmarnock, among other quaint villages. One of the most significant landmarks found on the Ayrshire Coast is Culzean Castle, which offers an insight into Scottish history dating back to the 18th- Century.

4. Stirling

Stirling is located in the middle of Scotland, where the highlands meet the lowlands and has been the birthplace for many Scottish Kings over the centuries. This little pocket of Scotland is steeped in history and is the site of one of the most notorious battles in our history, The Battle of Stirling Bridge, led by Robert the Bruce and William Wallace. If there’s anywhere in the country to learn about Scotland’s history, Stirling is it. There are plenty of fun activities there too, hikes, historic tours to the Wallace Monument, many restaurants and bars and even a Safari!

5. Edinburgh

No trip to Scotland is complete without spending a day in the capital, Edinburgh. Edinburgh is where the Scottish Parliament sits, has a medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town and has some of the most impressive architecture in the country. There is plenty to do and see in Edinburgh, from museums and galleries to a truly buzzing nightlife and foodie scene. Make sure to visit some of the weekly food and craft markets to bring a special piece of Scotland home with you.
