Winter In Amsterdam

As the winter months become colder, the city of Amsterdam becomes vibrant and cosy with its festive atmosphere. Granted the temperature does drop, but winter is known to be the best time to visit this city. Wrap up and read our latest blog on some of the top activities you do during winter in Amsterdam.   The annual Amsterdam Winter Light Festival is one of the best times of the year. The city turns into a cosy, festive outdoor art gallery with light installations popping up all over, from walls and buildings to the inside of the canals! The festival takes place from December 1st to January 20th and is free for all to enjoy. You can enjoy the art on foot, by bike or by taking a cosy boat tour with a guide talking you through the many installations and artworks and their meaning. Best of all, they serve delicious hot chocolate and mulled wine on board!

Skate on a Canal

Ice skating in Amsterdam is a must-do when visiting the city in the Winter. Although very rare when temperatures significantly drop, sections of Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht canals froze enough to support the weight of skaters. However, the last time this happened was back in 2018, although not to worry, the city has endless ice rinks for you to enjoy. ICE*Amsterdam is a very popular outdoor ice rink that is popular amongst both tourists and visitors. Rental skates are available, as are warm drinks and snacks, which you can enjoy before and after your session. Whether it be a romantic date or a family activity, this one is a memorable one for all.

Winter Markets

Throughout December Amsterdam is filled with Christmas cheer. There are endless festive markets to explore and warm up with some glühwein (mulled wine) and oliebollen (deep-fried delicious doughnuts) while you search perfect gifts for your family and friends this Christmas. The Funky Xmas Market happens every Sunday in mid-December at Westergasfabriek, here you can see the work of many local artists, fashion designers and unique handmade, one-of-a-kind, accessories and art. Another market to note is Amsterdam Winter Paradise, where the RAI Amsterdam transforms into a winter wonderland, with a giant Ferris wheel overlooking the city, seasonal parties and ice skating rinks as well as food and local stalls for you to browse.

National Tulip Day

Granted you might think National Tulip Day is more an occasion for Spring as opposed to Winter, however, we can assure you this is not the case. This annual event is celebrated on the third Saturday of January located in Dam Square, you will witness a beautiful temporary garden display. With vibrant colours, there are over 200,000 tulips, a stunning sight for you to see, you won’t regret taking a visit there.
