History of Grainger Market
The market was designed by architect John Dobson and was officially opened in October 1835. The market was named after Richard Grainger who was responsible for the redevelopment of 19th century Newcastle and included a market as one of the key additions. The market was originally designed to have two sections – a meat market divided into long aisles, and a vegetable market designed as a large, open-plan hall. the original 1835 timber  of the Grainger Arcade was damaged by fire and was replaced by the bright and airy glass roof we love today soon after. The Grainger Market is now a Grade I Listed Market and is one of the city’s prized attractions.
