UEFA Women’s EURO History

The UEFA Women’s Champions League is a women’s association football competition established in 2001. The UEFA Executive Committee approved the proposal to introduce a European Women’s club competition and a meeting in Paris on 23 May 2000 and the women’s world cup was established shortly after. It is the only international competition for European women’s football clubs. The competition is open to the league champions of all UEFA member associations and 46 of UEFA’s 53 member associations have entered into this competition.

The first competition was held in 2001/02 with 33 teams competing to the final. The competition ended with an exciting match between Umeå of Sweden and FFC Frankfurt which ended in a 2-0 triumph for the German side. In 2020/2021, the competition underwent radical reformatting, both in terms of financial rewards and television coverage for the clubs, and the tournament itself. Lyon reclaimed the title with a thrilling 3-1 deposing of Barcelona in Turin. We now enjoy a 16-team group stage with exciting pairings and competitive fixtures over 12 days.

Where are UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 being held?

The event will take place from 6th to 31st July in England with 15 other nations joining the hosts. UEFA Women’s Euro Prizes

The current competition trophy was unveiled in Manchester at the draw for the 2005 final tournament on 19 January of that year. The original trophy, which is used for the official presentation ceremony at the final, remains in UEFA’s keeping and ownership at all times. A full-size replica trophy is awarded to the winning club. The winning team is also presented with 40 gold medals and the runner-up with 40 silver medals. The winners will also face the champions winners of the 2022 CONMEBOL Copa América Femenina with the date and location announced later.
