When you think of Dublin, you’ll conjure images of the iconic Guinness Storehouse, fantastic shopping in the city centre and wild nights in Temple Bar. Did you know that Dublin is also one of the most scenic parts of the country for outdoor adventures? We are lucky to be a stone’s throw from both the Irish coastline and the Dublin mountains, both ideal for a scenic walk to up your fitness levels or just to enjoy a leisurely walk to stretch your legs and capture some truly Insta-worthy pictures. Book your stay in our ideally located serviced apartments in Sandyford and discover Dublin from a different perspective.
The iconic red lighthouse and the red & white striped chimneys of the nearby Pigeon House Power Station have become an iconic part of Dublin’s landscape in recent times, with more and more people including a visit in their Dublin itinerary. Head toward Sandymount for a walk along the sandy beach and admire the landscape or for a longer walk, head to the Great South Wall towards the lighthouse. The walk takes just over an hour to complete with beautiful views of Dublin Bay the entire way.
Bray to Greystones Walk
Technically, this walk is not in the county limits but any Dub will tell you – if it’s on the DART line we’ve adopted it as part of Dublin! The Bray to Greystones walk is one of the most popular walks in the area. The walkway takes you from Bray, a typical seaside resort with amusements, arcades and ice cream, along the cliff edge, looking out across the Irish Sea almost the entire way, to the affluent little town called Greystones packed with delicious lunch locations and boutique shops and cafes. The walk takes about an hour and a half and if you prefer you can get the train back to your starting place.
Dun Laoghaire Harbour
For an easy walk with stunning views across the Ocean, drive for 10-minutes to Dun Laoghaire Harbour. This gorgeous seaside town is the perfect place for a seafood lunch or dinner followed by an ice cream from one of the brilliant ice cream shops (we love Scrumdiddlys) and a walk along the pier. The walk to the end of the pier takes just 30 minutes and it is such a pleasure on a sunny day. If you’re feeling brave enough, follow your walk with a dip in the Irish Sea at the forty foot. For non-natives, the name of the place can be quite daunting but if you need directions just ask for ‘Dun Lerry’, we’ll know what you mean!
Moving back to the beautiful Dublin mountains next with a visit to the Three Rock & Ticknock trails. Ticknock is only reachable by car but there is free parking on site. It is also the starting point for many other marked trailheads such as the Fairy Castle Loop, the Dublin Mountains Way and the Wicklow Way. The main trailhead is moderately difficult so a fair level of fitness is required but once you reach the highest points, you’ll see some of the best views across Dublin City, Dublin Bay and Wicklow in all directions. It’s a popular spot for adventure sports like mountain biking, bouldering and hiking.
The Hellfire Club Walk (officially known as ‘the Montpellier Loop Trail’) is a lovely Dublin walk that will treat you to spectacular panoramic views out over Dublin City. It is a relaxed one hour walk which requires moderate fitness levels and shoes with good grip, leading to Dublin’s most popular haunted House, the Hellfire Club. Legend says that a group of men playing cards in the now abandoned ruins were joined by the devil himself, identifiable only by his hooves! You can venture up during the day or at night for fantastic views.
Although a little far removed from our serviced apartments in Sandyford, if you find yourself in the city centre, you should take a stroll through Europe’s biggest walled park, Phoenix Park. At an astounding 1752 acres, it is home to much wildlife, fantastic walking and cycling trails, the fantastic Dublin Zoo, herds of wild deer and stag, Farmleigh House, cafes, playgrounds, monuments and so much more. It is also home to the president of Ireland, his wife and his adorable dogs in Irelands mini White House, Aras an Uachtarain. It’s an ideal place for a romantic or family stroll and a picnic.
