The best walking routes in Bristol Redcliffe

New year, new me, there is a lot of pressure to diet, take up a gruelling fitness routine, cut out meat and alcohol to start the year well. Well we say, don’t deny yourself the finer things in life! Instead, make small changes that are easy to continue throughout the year and you’ll be on your way to a healthier lifestyle before you even realise. If you’re lucky enough to live in Bristol or are staying in PREMIER SUITES serviced apartments in Bristol Redcliffe explore the city on foot. Take in the urban sites, the countryside parks and beautiful estates in and around the Bristol area.

Bristol City Centre

Bristol is often described as ‘best explored on foot’, mainly because the incredible street art deserves your time and effort to admire. As the birthplace of Banksy and other iconic artists, the city has something colourful and exciting around each corner. Street Art Tours have become a must-do when visiting the city and are led by expert guides that have a wealth of knowledge about the artists, their backgrounds and inspirations and the meaning behind their most famous pieces. Contact Where The Wall to check availability or to book your slot for a walking tour you won’t forget.  Bristol’s central area – which also includes the Harbourside, Old City, and Bristol Shopping Quarter – is well signposted for visitors on foot.

The Harbourside

The Harbourside is our little slice of tranquillity from the bustling city centre and is one of the most popular walking routes in Bristol. It’s ideal for walkers to enjoy the city views, enjoying a peaceful and traffic-free stroll. The Harbour Heritage Trail will give you a bit of background information on the area and keep you entertained along the way. You should also visit M Shed, a collection of colourful exhibitions detailing the history of the city and its people from its dockside shed. M Shed is a starting point for 20 walking routes including a sculpture trail, a city centre nature trail and a trail including local churches. To take a walk around the historic Old City and what remains of the Norman city walls, follow the Old City Heritage Trail.

Bristol Parks and Green Spaces

If you fancy a no-fuss walk or a space to stretch your legs with a jog or run, Bristol has hundreds of beautiful parks and green spaces, ideal for exercise, picnics, family days out or romantic strolls. You’ll find large municipal spaces like the historic Queen Square Parks or smaller city parts like the nearby Temple Gardens, complete with the original church which was built by the Knights Templar in the 12th Century. You can find more information about parks in the area, opening and closing times and the best walking routes in Bristol on the Bristol Gov website.

Leigh Woods

If you’d like to explore a bit more of the great outdoors, the trip to Leigh Woods will take you past Spike Island and along the River Avon. The walk will take about 90 minutes each way (just less than 5 miles), taking in the lovely harbourside walk, through Underfall Yard (a working boatyard), over the Ashton Avenue Bridge and by Clifton Suspension Bridge. If you want to spend more of your day exploring Leigh Woods, you can drive in less than 15-minutes. Once you’re there you can enjoy the woodland views or tackle one of the challenging hiking or mountain biking trails.

Blaise Castle Estate

If you have access to a car or don’t mind travelling by public transport, you should take the 20-minute trip to Blaise Castle Estate. This beautiful parkland is a huge 650-acres including a museum, a  castle and a very impressive children’s play area with a sandpit, climbing frames, a slide and swings, climbing towers, tube slides, zip wire, high swings, treehouse, basket swing, roundabout, seesaw and trampoline. It’s a fantastic day out for the whole family. You might also enjoy one of the five lovely walking routes taking you around the perimeter of the estate.
