Why the port of Rotterdam is a must visit

Did you know Rotterdam Port is the largest port in Europe? The harbour functions as an important transit point for the transport of bulk and other goods between the European continent and other parts of the world. Rotterdam is one of the largest grain and general cargo harbours on the continent and a major trans-shipment port for inland Europe with tens of thousands of barges commuting each year. The Port is a huge part of the heritage and culture of Rotterdam.

PREMIER SUITES Rotterdam is ideal accommodation for those visiting or doing business in the port, less than 20-minutes’ walk from door to water.

History of Rotterdam Port

The Port of Rotterdam was first established in 1283 when a small fishing village was constructed at the mouth of the Rotte River. In 1360, a canal to the Schie was constructed making the port a major seaport waterway. The new port gave Rotterdam access to bigger European cities and over the next hundred years or so, it grew to become the world’s biggest dredged harbour. In the 1940s, Nazi Germany bombed the city of Rotterdam and destroyed about a third of the port facilities. The port and surrounding area was rebuilt and has gone from strength to strength ever since, extending to cover around 40kms along the river from the historic harbour area in the city centre to the Europort.

The Port of Rotterdam is the base of the city’s economy.  In 2020, the surrounding area had a population of 651,446 and was home to over 180 nationalities.

Walking & Cycling Rotterdam Port

Walking and cycling along the banks of the port is a popular pastime for both locals and tourists. It’s an area with two distinct habitats. On one side you’ll see big machinery flanked by tall buildings and impressive industrial areas. On the other, you’ll see an extensive natural area that is home to a variety of animals and plants including many rare and protected species. There are 26 information panels dotted along the way giving you background on the habitats and history of the area.

World Port Days

As has become tradition, Rotterdam will be taking part in the annual World Port Days, this year between 3-5 September 2021. This exciting day allows visitors an insider’s tour of the port, enjoying various excursions to learn all about the port and port companies. It’s an educational and fun day out for all ages and if you cannot make it in person, you can visit online instead. Even if you don’t have tickets, you can enjoy a fascinating photo exhibition all about life in the port on the external walls of the Maritime Museum.
