Dublin is full of famous sights; but if you want to go beyond the usual tourist stops and get a real feel for the city; there are plenty of hidden gems and local favourites to check out. Staying at PREMIER SUITES Sandyford puts you in the perfect spot to explore the less obvious side of Dublin. You are close to the Luas for quick access into the city; and far enough out to enjoy a slower pace when you want it.
Here is a guide to the best non touristy things to do in Dublin; all easily reached from your base in Sandyford.
1. Walk the Great South Wall
Skip the packed promenade at Howth and head to Poolbeg Lighthouse instead. The Great South Wall walk takes you out into Dublin Bay with sea on both sides and the famous red lighthouse at the end. It is about 4km each way and rarely crowded.
Pack a coffee and take it slow; the views of the city and sea are worth it. You can get a bus or drive to the start point at Pigeon House Road.
2. Visit the National Print Museum
Just off the beaten path in Beggars Bush Barracks; the National Print Museum gives you a proper look at Ireland’s printing and publishing history. It is hands on; compact; and surprisingly interesting. Entry is cheap and the guides are full of stories.
There is a nice café onsite too; perfect for a quiet morning out.
3. Stroll Through the War Memorial Gardens
Most people head to Phoenix Park but miss the Irish National War Memorial Gardens nearby. Designed by Edwin Lutyens; the gardens are peaceful; well kept; and a great place for reflection.
You will find rose gardens; fountains; and views over the River Liffey. It is ideal for a quiet walk or a picnic on a sunny day.
4. Explore Dún Laoghaire and the People’s Park Market
Take the DART from town or drive from Sandyford to Dún Laoghaire; a coastal town loved by locals. Walk the East Pier; get an ice cream from Teddy’s; and explore the weekend market in the People’s Park.
The market runs every Sunday and has food stalls; crafts; and a nice community feel.
5. Get Lost in Marsh’s Library
Beside St Patrick’s Cathedral but often missed by tourists; Marsh’s Library is a hidden gem. It is one of the oldest public libraries in Ireland; with original oak bookcases and chained books still in place.
It is quiet; atmospheric; and looks like something out of a film. Entry is a few euro; and you can be in and out in under an hour.
6. Try a Swim at Seapoint
If you are brave enough; join the locals for a sea swim at Seapoint. Just a few minutes past Blackrock on the DART; this spot is popular year round for cold water dips. There are changing shelters and steps into the water; plus great views of Dublin Bay.
Even if you do not swim; it is a nice place to sit with a coffee and watch the world go by.
7. Discover Dublin’s Markets
Move past the big shopping centres and try:
- The Green Door Market in Dublin 8 for local produce
- Liberty Market in the Liberties for old school bargains
- Temple Bar Food Market early on a Saturday before the crowds
These places show the local side of the city and give you a break from high street chains.
8. See a Local Theatre Show
Big names play at the Bord Gáis and Abbey Theatre; but if you want to see up and coming acts or smaller productions; check out:
- Smock Alley Theatre
- The New Theatre
- Project Arts Centre
These spots are smaller; cheaper; and often more interesting than the mainstream venues.
9. Walk the Dodder Greenway
Right near Sandyford; the Dodder River Walk is a lovely off road path that runs from Tallaght through Rathfarnham and on towards Donnybrook. You will see herons; ducks; old mills; and quiet pockets of green in the middle of the suburbs.
Perfect for a morning walk or a break from city noise.
10. Head to a Local GAA Match
For a real taste of Irish culture; skip the tourist pubs and go see a GAA match. Clubs across the city hold weekend games in football and hurling. It is fast paced; passionate; and a brilliant way to see a different side of Irish sport.
Ask our team at PREMIER SUITES Sandyford if there is a match on nearby during your stay.
