Cilla Black Born Priscilla White, actress, singer, and entertainer Cilla Black became a household name in the 1960s starting as a singer with two number one hits in the UK chart. Encouraged by her friends The Beatles, Cilla Black went on to have a successful TV Career, hosting her own BBC variety show and hit entertainment shows such as Blind Date, Surprise Surprise and Moment of Truth. In 2013, she celebrated 50 years in showbiz and passed away in 2015 at the age of 72. She remains one of the most beloved scousers with a statue of dedication to her on Mathew Street.
If you’re a fan of blockbusters, you’ll have heard of Taron Egerton. He’s just turned 30 and already has an impressive IMDB catalogue to his name. So far, hit movies include two Kingsman films, the Eddie the Eagle biopic and most recently as The Rocket Man himself, Elton John. He was born in Birkenhead to Liverpudlian parents and moved to North Wales when he was in his early teens. He’s a rising star to keep an eye on.
If you’ve watched any TV drama set in London or Liverpool, chances are you’ve come across the excellent Stephen Graham. A proud Liverpudlian originally from Kirby, he first came to our attention in 2006 as Combo in the hit movie This Is England -written and directed by Shane Meadows. He has been a constant feature on our screens since then, most recently playing gripping roles in BBC’s line of Duty and playing Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire. He’s a permanent addition to the Liverpool hall of fame.
Wayne Rooney, a household name in sports, was born in Croxteth, Liverpool in 1985 and went on to become one of the most successful international football stars. While playing schoolboy league football, he once scored 72 goals in one season, a record which stood until 2010. He rose to fame with English Premier League team Manchester United scoring 53 goals in 120 caps between 2003-2018.These days, excluding a couple of public scandals, he is happily married to Colleen Rooney with four adorable children and plays for Derby County Football Club.
Did you know that a fifth of the Spice Girls was born in Liverpool? Melanie C –also known as Sporty Spice –was born in Whiston but raised in Widnes. Arguably the best and lead singer of the band, Mel C went on to have the most successful solo career of all of the spices, giving her an estimated wealth of £27million at the time of their reunion.
