The Discovery Museum
Whether you’re here on your summer holiday or taking a couple of days mid-term, the learning never stops for your little ones. Keeping them entertained is easier when they are interested and engrossed in an activity or learning something new. The Discovery Museum is a fantastic space for little minds to discover and invent. It’s a science and local history museum located on Blandford Square, less than a five-minute walk from our Newcastle accommodation. As you enter the museum, you’ll come face to face with Turbinia, an impressive steamship and an important part of our local history. The museum has some very impressive exhibitions and tells the story of the city from an industrial perspective. The PLAY + INVENT space is great for hands-on learning and creating.
Life Science Centre
While the Discovery Museum allows little minds to explore, the Life Science Centre allows them to create while they learn. This award-winning Science Centre is full of exciting exhibitions, activities and events. Children and adults learn in a more hands-on way with a host of events and activities every season. Visit the science theatre, creativity zone, wow zone, learn more about the human brain or try some experiments for yourself. You can also visit the North East’s biggest planetarium and get a thrill from the fantastic 4D motion ride. It’s a truly unique and fascinating day out for all ages and a great way to spend a day in Newcastle with your family.
The Great North Museum
The best way to get to know a new place is to look into its past and Newcastle is no exception. The Great North Museum is a museum of natural history and ancient civilisations. They have some excellent exhibitions that change a couple of times a year, each as interesting as the last. Until September 2023, you can visit Myth Quest, an original fantasy adventure in which the visitor becomes the hero. There is a little of everything here with a library, ancient Egypt and Greek galleries, a living planet gallery, a natural history display, a world culture gallery, a planetarium and so much more. It takes around three hours to fully explore the museum and your little ones are guaranteed to find something they are fascinated by.
Indoor Adventure
If you’ve ever visited or lived in the UK, you know that the weather doesn’t always suit our plans. If you had planned a day out in the fresh air to tire out your little ones but the rain had other ideas, never fear. There are lots of indoor adventure centres around Newcastle where they can spend their energy. Mr Mulligans Space Golf has three epic adventure golf courses, electro-darts, pool, plus a fantastic bar and restaurant and it’s less than five-minute from our accommodation in Newcastle on foot. Jump Giants is a little further away but it’s a fun-filled day for older kids with trampolining and an adventure playground. You can also take a trip to nearby Tyneside Cinema to watch the latest release kids movies.
