Explore Glasgow’s Hidden Gems

No matter how many times you’ve been to Glasgow, even if you live here, there is always something new to see or do. Behind the gorgeous architecture in the city are places that tourists don’t often visit, instead focusing on the top Glasgow tourist attractions. Glasgow has a lot to offer, including top-class accommodation like PREMIER SUITES serviced apartments in Glasgow. Here are some of the many hidden gems worth visiting

Ashton Lane:

9-minute drive

It’s a bit of a walk from our aparthotel in Glasgow but definitely worth it. This gorgeous laneway is one of the most picture-worthy places in the city, with dozens of fairy lights overhead and rustic cobbled stones underfoot. Hidden away in the city’s West End, Aston Lane is home to many great bars and restaurants, including the famous eatery Ubiquitous Chip. You’ll also find the Grosvenor Cinema, recently refurbished and restored showing all of the top films and hosting some quite unusual events.

Glasgow University:

8-minute drive

While it’s hardly unknown, Glasgow University is not somewhere tourists would often think to visit. Hidden in plain sight, it is one of Scotland’s highest-ranking universities and is a great place to visit for fans of architecture, photography, art and history. Connecting the colleges’ buildings, the atmospheric cloisters have featured on the silver screen more than a few times, notably in movies like Cloud Atlas and Outlander. You can take a guided or self-guided tour of the Uni and learn a lot about Scotland’s oldest and most highly listed building and its former students.

St Aloysius’ Church:

5-minute walk

Glasgow is home to several magnificent churches and one of the more beautiful is St Aloysius’ Church, 5-minutes’ walk from our serviced apartments in Glasgow. Although externally it looks like a fairly unassuming Redstone building, inside it’s a treasure trove of religious decorations and artefacts including a rare statue of The Black Madonna. The church is connected to the local St Aloysius’ college, so you’ll often find groups of students in and around the church taking part in ceremonies and school events. The churches interior is peaceful and opulent, accented by a gorgeous dome overhead and intricate stained glass windows throughout. It’s the perfect place to visit to pray, rest or admire.

Platform:

15-minute walk

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Argyle St. Arches are home to Platform, a food market bringing a huge array of delicious and exotic food to Glasgow’s city centre. Some of Scotland’s best independent street food traders set up at Platform, giving us a taste of the best food from across the country and beyond. There is something to suit every taste and pocket with many very cheap options available. The line-up of traders changes often so even if you think you’ve seen it all, look again! It’s open until midnight on Friday & Saturday nights, making it a great places to hang out with friends that isn’t a pub.

Britannia Panopticon:

20-minute walk

Situated in Glasgow down New Wynd Lane, the Britannia Panopticon is one of the oldest remaining music halls in Britain. It’s situated above an amusement arcade and so easily missed by locals and tourists alike. The music hall began in 1857 in the midst of the Victorian era, when unemployment was high, and entertainment was at a premium on the overcrowded streets. It held just over 1500 visitors at a time, watching acts like singers, dancers and comedians. These days it still holds shows but also functions as a museum and visitor attraction with free entry every day.
