City Low Emission Scheme

According to the UN, fossil fuels – coal, oil and gas – are by far the largest contributor to global climate change, accounting for over 75% of global greenhouse gas and almost 90% of carbon monoxide emissions. Passenger cars specifically account for a shocking 41% of carbon monoxide production alone! Glasgow has decided to take action against the rising global temperature with the introduction of a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) in the centre of the city. This means that vehicles entering the LEZ must comply with less-polluting emission standards or face a penalty charge.

As supporters of sustainability, our serviced apartments in Glasgow welcome this change and encourage guests to plan their journeys carefully by public transport while staying in our accommodation in central Glasgow.

Why do we need a LEZ?

Harmful vehicle emissions not only add to climate change issues on a wider scale, they also cause health problems in individuals, particularly for those most vulnerable. Although good progress has been made in recent years to improve Glasgow’s air quality, harmful nitrogen dioxide is being recorded in our city at dangerous levels which do not meet the legal maximums. The main source of this harmful pollutant is road traffic and reducing the number of cars on the road is an essential measure to improve air quality and protect public health. The introduction of a Low Emission Zone will also encourage individuals and businesses to move to less polluting vehicles, encourage people to move away from private car use and increase the safety and attractiveness of our city centre.

What does this mean for me?

From June 1st, 2023, a Low Emission Zone will come into force in Glasgow City Centre. All vehicles entering the city centre zone area will need to meet the strict guidelines for vehicle emissions or face a penalty every time they enter. There are some exemptions to these and residents will be given extra time to comply. If you are planning to upgrade your car in the near future, it’s time to consider an electric vehicle as all fully electric vehicles comply with LEZ requirements in Scotland. Motorcycles and mopeds are unaffected. Before entering the city by private vehicle, you will need to check if your vehicle meets LEZ emission standards by using Transport Scotlands Vehicle Checker.

Where is the LEZ?

There has been an extensive awareness campaign around the introduction of LEZ to Glasgow City Centre, something locals will have heard and seen on TV & radio. The signage around the next phase of the scheme has been in place since 2018 and cannot be missed when you’re driving through the city.  Glasgow’s LEZ covers an area of the city centre bounded by the M8 motorway to the north and west, the River Clyde to the south and Saltmarket/High Street to the east. Signage is clearly displayed on all sides of the zone and should be adhered to strictly by drivers of all types of vehicles bar motorbikes and fully electric cars to avoid penalty.
