Glasgow’s Christmas Lights Switch On
20th November is the official start of the Christmas season in Glasgow with the switching on of the Christmas lights. George Square, the location of our serviced apartment accommodation in Glasgow, is Christmas central with thousands of twinkling lights and lots of festive cheer. Glasgow Loves Christmas is bringing back the free switch-on event for the first time since 2019. The event is ticketed, and tickets are free of charge. It’s a really popular event in the Glasgow festive calendar so apply for tickets soon to avoid disappointment. We’re also looking forward to family favourites like the Blessing of the Crib in George Square, Baby’s First Christmas and the Glasgow Santa Dash taking place across the season.
If you’re lucky enough to get a George Square view in our serviced apartments in Glasgow, you’ll have the best seat in the house.
A Wee Walk & A Whisky (or three!)
Walking tours are two a penny in Glasgow but this year you can try a tour with a difference. Enjoy a wee walk and a whisky or three in a local pub with a fun, local guide this Christmas. You’ll see a new side of Glasgow with this small group walking tour discovering the history and culture of Glasgow and the thriving whiskey industry. Get tips and tricks from a Glasgow local and hear the stories of the famous and lesser-known figures in Glasgow, such as our patron saint St Mungo, and even Dr Who. After the walk, you’ll deserve a delicious warming nip of whiskey. Taste three of Scotland’s finest whiskies and learn more about their production and history as you taste. Tours start at 5pm every day, last 2 hours and cost £35pp.
Glasgow Running Tours
Another unusual Glasgow tour that will take you off the beaten track is Glasgow Running Tour. A running tour is exactly what it sounds like, a guided sightseeing tour that happens while running. It’s ideal for fitness fanatics who love to discover a new place as fast as possible! You’ll take in the major landmarks but also some lesser-known sights you won’t find in the tour book with buildings and statues, street art and plenty of local legends along the way. There are stops along the way to hear stories and ask questions and most importantly, catch your breath! The run starts and finishes on George Square is around 8km and lasts 90 mins. It’s a great way to warm up in the nippy winter chill.
Panto in Glasgow
Nothing says Christmas like the screams of ‘he’s behind you!’ from a group of excited children. We’re spoiled for choice with plenty of pantomimes on show in Glasgow this winter. Catch Beauty & The Beast in King’s Theatre, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in Tron Theatre, The Adventures of Aladdin in The Pavilion Theatre or a real Glaswegian show, Sleeping Betty in various locations around Glasgow including the Maryhill Community Central Hall.
