Christmas Light Switch On
The festive spirit arrives in Reading on 19th November when thousands of twinkling lights illuminate the night skies. The official light switch-on will be accompanied by live Christmas music from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. ‘However you Christmas’ is the theme of a series of events in 2022, celebrating different ways to mark the festive season with something for everyone available in Reading.
Visit Santa in Reading
One of the highlights of Christmas for children, parents and families is the chance to see the big man for themselves. Santa arrives in Reading this year on 26th November and visits every weekend until 17th December. From the 17th until Christmas eve, Santa will take up residence full-time in Santa’s Grotto at Broad Street Mall. Your child will get to meet and take some pictures with Santa and get a lovely keepsake gift to take home and his elves This sell-out event is popular with locals and visitors so buy tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Small Business Christmas Market Place
On 3rd and 4th of November, the Small Business Christmas Market Place returns to Reading, giving independent and local businesses a chance to stand out. Forget high streets and brand names, shopping locally is more important this year than ever. This exciting market has everything you need to fill that space under the Christmas tree including food and drink, gifts, homeware, candles, toys and so much more. There will also be live music and children’s Christmas activities to get everyone in the festive spirit.
Christmas Carols
Nothing says Christmas like hearing your favourite carol while shopping for Christmas gifts. This year, the council have arranged live music to play on Broad Street every weekend in December, starting on the 3rd. We are delighted to welcome some fantastic local singers and musicians setting the scene for a very exciting festive season.
Reading Lantern Parade – Dance of the Fireflies
We are delighted to welcome back one of the most memorable events on the Christmas calendar this year, Reading Lantern Parade. This year the theme is Dance of the Fireflies, an appropriate title for an event with hundreds of glowing. Join a crowd of people on 10th December at 5:30 pm for a magical winter lantern procession for everybody in the community. Walk together along Broad Street to Forbury Gardens where you can also take part in Reading’s Reindeer Rave & Crafts.
Ice Skating in Reading at Winter Wonderland
Berkshire’s largest ice rink returns to Reading on 14th November and brings with it plenty of Christmas cheer. Ice skating, especially surrounded by so many festive lights and decorations is a fun, family-friendly activity for all ages. Whether you fancy yourself as the new Torvill & Dean or will be more like Bambi on Ice, it’s an activity that will leave you with great and often hilarious memories. The rink is located in Hills Meadow, surrounded by fairground rides and stalls. You’ll need to buy tickets for this popular event and the Unlimited Ride Pass will give you four hours of limitless access to both the brilliant rides and the skating rink. They also do family tickets and group tickets for up to 10 people. It promises to be a great day out for groups, couples and families of all ages.
