Best Day Trips From Dublin This Winter

While we truly believe there is enough activity and beauty in Dublin to keep you occupied for weeks, sometimes it’s nice to escape the big smoke and see a little more of what Ireland has to offer. The city is well connected by road and public transport making day trips from Dublin a breeze! If you’re looking for the perfect base to explore our capital city and beyond, look no further than PREMIER SUITES Serviced apartments Dublin. Our aparthotels in Dublin offer great value, extra-special facilities and excellent public transport links so you can explore some of the best places to visit on a day trip:

Wicklow Mountains

Just to the south of Dublin lies the Garden of Ireland – County Wicklow. Wicklow is packed with gorgeous scenery, mountains, lakes, beaches and so much to see and do. The Wicklow Mountains National Park has everything from historic landmarks like Glendalough to adventure sites where you can hike, cycle, swim, fish, kayak and any other adventure activity you can think of! While you’re there enjoy the indigenous flora and fauna, a lot of which is not found anywhere else on the island.

Howth

To experience the true beauty of Dublin, sometimes you just have to take a small step away from the city. If you want to take a day trip but can’t travel too far, a short DART (train) journey will take you to a picturesque fishing village along the Dublin coast. Don’t forget your camera and while there you can enjoy the scenic views across the Irish Sea, the gorgeous lighthouse, climb Howth Head, visit Howth Castle and if you’re lucky enough to be there over a weekend you can visit the market. The weather changes often in the Winter so try to save Howth for a clear day and if not, take shelter in one of the fabulous seafood restaurants to try the freshly caught fish of the day.

Belfast

Did you know that you only need to drive for just over an hour on the island of Ireland to technically cross the border into another country? Belfast is roughly two-hours drive from PREMIER SUITES Sandyford aparthotels in Dublin and it’s well worth a visit. As well as the fantastic shopping, there is so much history in the city – from the political side, like the Peace Wall & Crumlin Jail, to the more artistic Queens Quarter, there is something to suit all interests. Don’t forget to visit the world-famous Titanic Experience to explore all aspects of the ill-fated cruise liner.

Giants Causeway & Carrick-a-Rede Rope bridge:

While you’re up North, there is plenty to see and do away from the big city Belfast. Take a quick spin up to the Giants Causeway, Ireland’s most impressive natural wonder. There are 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption and you can explore them at your own pace and take pictures while also enjoying the coastal views. Drive another 15-minutes to the famous Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge that links the mainland to the tiny island of Carrick-a-rede. Weather dependent, you can cross the bridge and visit for yourself but be warned, it’s not for the faint of heart height-wise!

So there you have it, some of the best day trips from Dublin that you can do at any time of the year. If you’re looking for alternative accommodation to avoid overpriced hotels, choose PREMIER SUITES Sandyford. Our aparthotel in Dublin offers fantastic value for money, must more space than a standard hotel stay and excellent facilities giving you a real home from home feeling.
