A Taste of Local Culture in Glasgow

Are you planning to visit Glasgow soon and need some suggestions? Maybe you are a regular or return visitor to our wonderful city and are looking for some inspiration of new things to experience? Look no further than our handy guide to the local culture of Glasgow!

Eat

Glasgow is a place with a huge variety of cuisines on offer, so much that a lot of time our traditional Scottish fare is often lost among the noise. One of the finest eclectic eateries in the city has to be Two Fat Ladies at the Buttery. This place is definitely more for a celebratory meal than a casual bite; their food is sumptuous and the atmosphere has a real air of luxury. Their traditional and seasonal menu food is to die for and for those with a sweet tooth they offer a greatest hits of the dessert menu in ‘The Grand Dessert’.

Drink

If you want to experience Scottish beer brewed just metres from where you sit, visit Glasgow’s first ever brewpub The Shilling Brewing Co. They have a great menu full of beers, both on tap and bottled, all of which are brewed onsite making them the freshest pints in Glasgow! The staff have a great knowledge of the menu and how the beers are brewed and are always happy to recommend. They’re only 10 minutes walk from our door so not far to stumble home having tried some of their unusual flavour combinations

Things to see

When in Glasgow, you must visit our fantastic and informative range of museums which includes everything from modern art and history to police services. Our personal favourite is The Tenement House which gives a rare insight into life in 20th century Glasgow. You can admire all of the original fixtures and fittings including the coal-fired kitchen range and working gaslights. This is the house of the late Agnes Toward and she has kept plenty of trinkets from back in the day, like old jars of jam from the 1920s, medicines and cleaning products, to show what life was like for an independent woman at the time.

Parks

Inside Glasgow’s famed botanic gardens lies one of its most impressive structures, Kibble House. This iron-framed glasshouse was first used as an events venue but in 1893 it was given a new function to cultivate and maintain temperate plants (the eldest of these being a 120-year old Fern Tree). The glasshouse also contains a variety of statues and its location in the beautiful Botanic Gardens adds to the magical ambiance.

Shopping

A trip to the city would not be complete without a visit to some of Glasgow’s many shopping areas. The Barras has been a Glaswegian institution since the 1920s and although some say it has seen better days, you will not get a more authentic experience of Scottish trading. The stalls contain a huge variety of wares including everything from fresh fruit and meat to toys and knick-knacks, all with a healthy serving of our famed Scottish charm and wit!
