8 Things You Can Do for FREE in Reading, United Kingdom

Travelling often is a fantastic way to explore new places, cultures and expand your mind. Unfortunately, it can be expensive! Getting here might be economical and if you book a serviced apartment in the UK, you can save on dining expenses by cooking your own meals. But what else can you do for free when you’re here? Here’s our list of the best free activities in Reading to get you started:

Forbury Gardens

This pretty park is set in the centre of Reading and is perfect for an afternoon stroll. There are benches dotted around, a café with light refreshments and a bandstand in the centre. It’s the perfect place to bring a picnic if the weather allows and during the brighter months the colourful flowerbeds add a burst of spring freshness. You can also take some snaps of The Maiwand Lion and Forbury Hill while you’re here.

Park Run

If you like to keep fit even when on vacation, you can join some friendly locals for a 5km Parkrun This run is a timed event that’s entirely run by volunteers and is free for all to participate. The event takes place in Thames Valley Park and afterwards, all are invited for a post-run coffee in the Jolly Anglers pub a short distance away. It’s a great way to meet and chat to locals and a bit of friendly competition never hurt!

Thames Path

Staying with the outdoor theme, if you like the idea of a scenic walk along a leafy riverside, follow the Thames Path along part of its 184 Mile route from the Cotswolds to London. You can join at any point and walk for as long as you’re able through one of the UK’s National Trails. Stop in a beautiful village called Sonning (about an hours walk away) and enjoy some lunch in The Bull Inn before heading back to your accommodation in Reading.

Harris Garden

Our own mini botanical garden, Harris Garden, is set on the grounds of the University of Reading, a short drive from PREMIER SUITES Reading. This perfectly placed and the well-manicured garden is a trove of biological wonders and local flora and fauna.

Public lectures at the University of Reading

The campus is impressive on its own, but you can also learn a lot if you attend one of their free public lectures. Covering everything from science to literature the talks are a great way to learn something new and unexpected. It’s also an ideal way to meet and discuss lectures with like-minded attendees.

Visit Reading Museum

Luckily one of the most impressive buildings and attractions in Reading is free to enter. Discover more about Reading’s local history, the Abbey Ruins, animals, art and more. Open since 1883, the museum is dedicated to educating visitors about many aspects of history and often have free events for individuals and families to take part in. One of the most impressive artefacts housed here is Britain’s Bayeux Tapestry.

Visit the Museum of English Rural Life

Another fascinating look into the history of Britain and its inhabitants in years gone by and how farming and rural life evolved to keep up with new technology and methods. They have truly immersive galleries, impressive collections and if you need to refuel, their café serves a great selection of refreshments. It’s a great place to bring the family as many exhibitions are interactive.

Musical evenings in the pub

Plenty of pubs around Reading hold regular music nights and it’s a great chance to enjoy some live music. You may want to buy a drink so it might not be an entirely free night out but there’s usually no entry fee for watching the band. There is a list of local events online every week on the Get Reading website which is also a great local guide
