5 bakeries in Bristol All Desert Lovers Need To Visit

Forget pub crawls, the only tour you want to take of Bristol is of our bakeries! If you’re craving a breakfast croissant or need to fill your sweet tooth after a delicious dinner, Bristol has many artisan bakeries cooking up a storm! Whether you prefer traditional bakes, quirky cakes or a quintessential afternoon tea, Bristol’s best cafes and tearooms have all of this and more. Here are some of the best bakeries in Bristol to get your sweet fix, morning, noon and night.

1. Farro Bakery – 5-minute walk

One of the closest spots to our short stay apartments in Bristol to grab a sweet treat is Farro Bakery. They specialise in Viennoiserie – French for “things from Vienna” – which includes a whole category of pastry like pain au raisin, brioche, croissants and many other delicious creations. When they opened their first retail outlet in mid-2019, there were queues around the corner to sample their delicious freshly baked goods but these days, queues have calmed and there are plenty of delicious sweets and savouries to go around. The Farro Bakery also supplies several cafes in Bristol, you can find their wares at stalls on Whiteladies Road and the Harbourside and Tobacco Factory markets.

2. Ah Toots – 8-minute walk

Not content with making the prettiest treats in all of Bristol, Ah Toots is an art-focused cakery (not bakery!) in the heart of the city. They are passionate about supporting local and so buy their supplies, meat, cheese and bread from local independent businesses. Their menu has a great selection of sandwiches, light bites, frittatas and of course the star of the show is their showstopping cake selection. You can order bespoke cakes, made to order by their talented bakers and they specialise in vegan and gluten-free options.

3. Source Café and Food Hall – 10 -minute walk

Source Café and Food Hall offers a unique food experience where you can buy the freshest produce from the shop and eat from a seasonally changing menu under one roof. Their delicious cakes are freshly made on-site, including our favourite chocolate, sour cherry and salted caramel brownies. Best of all, the entire operation is independently owned and less than 10-minutes from PREMIER SUITES Bristol. Inside it looks more like an artisanal market but outside you can enjoy an afternoon treat in the sun on their outdoor tables. Think of it as a very fancy picnic! You can find this local gem on one side of the St Nicholas Market.

4. Pinkman’s Bakery – 20-minute walk

Arguably the best bakery in all of Bristol, Pinkman’s Bakery offers hearty breakfasts and light lunches but it’s the indulgent cakes that make this bakery stand out from the crowd. Pinkmans is a modern look at what a bakery should be. It may not look like a typical bakery, but at the heart of Pinkmans are excellent bakers and a lot of hard work goes into making every treat they sell slow fermentation breads and a seasonal range of cakes and tarts, sourdoughnuts, sandwiches, pizzas, salads and slow roast meats. Everything they serve is made fresh on the premises and baked throughout the day in open view.

5. Harts Bakery – 20-minute walk

It’s a bit of a walk from our short stay apartments in Bristol but Harts Bakery is one of the best-known and most highly rated cafes in the city. This legendary bakery serves great coffee and there is a bakery on-site which supplies many local cafes and restaurants with delicious freshly baked goods. They describe themselves as an artisan bakery and working out of a large Victorian railway arch at Temple Meads station. Their specialities include sourdough, handmade pastries, seasonal cakes and other delicious savouries.

6. East Bristol Bakery – 25-minute walk

If you’re looking for a traditional bakery, and there are few left in the UK, head straight to East Bristol Bakery, a small but powerful bakery who believe in traditional methods to make ‘real bread’. This open plan bakery has won awards for its high-quality, handmade bread and cakes. The follow an ethos of ‘no unnecessary ingredients’ using organic flour from Shipton Mill, water, yeast and the highest quality sea salt from the incredible Cornish Sea Salt Company. They also make amazing sweets like salted rye cookies, cherry marzipan and ginger cake. It’s worth the 25-minute walk for the brownies alone!
