Christmas Time in Newcastle

If you’ve ever been to Newcastle you know how vibrant and buzzing the city centre is. This is especially true at Christmas time when the town literally lights up to celebrate this special time of year. The streets are filled with the sights, sounds and scents of Christmas and the whole town is in a good mood! Here are our pick of the must-do events in Newcastle over the season.

Christmas Market

This year sees the combination of the International Christmas Market and the Christmas Market showcasing the best local traders at the one location, so you can get double the shopping done! Forget buying Dad those same socks or Mum another scarf, buy your loved ones something unique and one of a kind, something they will never forget. The market has a great variety of stalls selling everything from art & design to local and international cuisine. Don’t forget to treat yourself to some mulled wine or a nice hot chocolate while you browse.

Enchanted Parks

Enchanted Parks is back this year and we are really excited to see what surprises they have in store. Enchanted Parks is an initiative of the local council who have commissioned specially chosen artists to transform Saltwell Park into a magical winter wonderland. This year’s event tells the enchanting story of Ursula Wailes, the eldest daughter of William Wailes and heiress to the Saltwell Towers Estate. They have filled the park with inventions, plants and mystical creatures to capture the imagination of adults and children alike. The event runs for 6 consecutive nights from 4th December and is free for all to enter.

Christmas Carols

If you are looking to celebrate Christmas in a more traditional way, make sure to catch one of the many carol services around the city. The city streets are filled with the sounds of all of your old favorites mixed with more modern jingles and we promise they will bring you straight back to Christmases past. Sage Gateshead has a great variety of music this year, everything from lunchtime sing-along to full orchestras and choir services. Warm up with some festive nibbles like mulled wine and mince pies in the main reception area before you enjoy the show.

Panto

Pantos are a great way to celebrate Christmas as a family, group of friends or as an alternative date idea. We are lucky to have a selection of Pantos in the area to choose from this year. The Theatre Royal is hosting their own rendition of Goldilocks and the Three Bears this year from 27th November until well into the new year. The world famous Berserk Riders will also be there to add their own unique brand of thrills and excitement to the show. It promises to be an evening full of fun, laughter and the odd grown-up joke that goes way over little heads!
