6 Must-See Sites in Newcastle

Although we live in an exciting and vibrant city with a rich culture and history, you’d be forgiven for missing some of our must-see sights on your trip. Some are lesser-known; some are a little out of the way of your accommodation in Newcastle, but ALL are well worth a visit! Here are some of the highlights that you really shouldn’t miss on the trip to Newcastle:

Newcastle Castle and Keep:

While accommodation in the United Kingdom is usually of a high standard, you may not find anything quite as spectacular as Newcastle Castle and Keep. Built on the site of the fortress that gave the city its name, the remaining structures of the medieval castle include the Castle Keep, the fortified stone tower and the Black Gate, its fortified gatehouse. Many city tours, which are suitable for children, will take you to the keep and its turrets where you can admire views across the city.

Millennium Bridge:

The Millennium Bridge is one of the most iconic features of the city of Newcastle and is particularly stunning when illuminated at night. It crosses the River Tyne from Gateshead Quays arts quarter on the south bank and the Quayside of Newcastle upon Tyne on the north bank. The bridge is nicknamed the ‘Blinking Eye Bridge’ or the ‘Winking Eye Bridge’ due to its shape and its tilting method. The bridge is solely for pedestrians and cyclists and is a great way to take in some bird’s eye views of the river.

Sage Gateshead:

It’s hard to miss Sage Gateshead when walking Quayside as the enormous structure dominates the skyline. The award-winning music venue was named one of the top 5 concert halls in the world recently and showcases music and performances from almost every genre of music from heavy metal to classical. The huge steel and glass structure is home to three performance areas which are modified to complement the style of music playing.

Theatre Royal:

Set amongst the beauty of Georgian-style Grey Street, Theatre Royal is a real jewel in Newcastle’s crown. The building is one of only nine Grade 1 listed theatre halls in the country and is widely regarded as one of the finest establishments in the UK. There are over 300 performances in the theatre each year from Shakespearian plays and opera to comedy shows and panto performances in the silly season. Supposedly there is even a resident ghost, The Grey Lady, who loves to spook staff and guests! Who knows, you may even get a chance to meet her.

St James’ Park:

Although there is so much more to Newcastle than football, we can’t deny that it is one of the city’s biggest passions. We are lucky to have a world-class (some would argue!) home team, Newcastle United, and their home ground St James’ Park is one of the most popular and visited monuments in the Tyneside region. If you’re lucky enough to coincide your visit with a match, be prepared for one of the most electric atmospheres you’ve ever witnessed. If not, you can still take a behind the scenes tour of the grounds.

Angel of the North:

No list of things to do in Newcastle would be complete without a trip to see the lady herself, Angel of the North. When you think of Newcastle, the gorgeous Angel is one of the first sights to come to mind and the iconic statue has become part of our identity. Standing at 20 metres high and 54 metre wide, the statue was built to symbolise the transformation between an industrial to an informational age.  She is widely known as a symbol of the North East pride and culture and is definitely one of the most popular selfie spots in Newcastle.
