Millions of people faced job shortages, land shortages and crop failure leading to rising taxes, poverty, and famine. The USA on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean was perceived as a land of economic opportunity. In the first hand of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, America was predominantly an agricultural country with an abundance of space and land.
