In 1360, a canal to the Schie was constructed making the port a major seaport waterway. The new port gave Rotterdam access to bigger European cities and over the next hundred years or so, it grew to become\u00a0the world&#8217;s biggest dredged harbour. In the 1940s, Nazi Germany bombed the city of Rotterdam and destroyed about a third of the port facilities. The port and surrounding area was rebuilt and has gone from strength to strength ever since, extending to cover around 40kms along the river from the historic harbour area in the city centre to the\u00a0Europort.<\/p><p>The Port of Rotterdam is the base of the city&#8217;s economy. \u00a0In 2020, the surrounding area had a population of 651,446 and was home to over 180 nationalities.<\/p><h2>Walking &amp; Cycling Rotterdam Port<\/h2><p>Walking and cycling along the banks of the port is a popular pastime for both locals and tourists.
