Stamppot<\/span> means \u201cmash pot\u201d and that\u2019s precisely what it is.<\/span> It’s a comfort food of the Netherlands\u00a0<\/span>where root vegetables are mixed with mashed potatoes, topped with smoky sausages and\u00a0<\/span>sometimes served with gravy, depending on taste. The<\/span> vegetables typically used in this mix are kale,\u00a0<\/span>endive, cabbage, carrot, or sauerkraut.<\/span> As children, many Dutch people looked forward to (or\u00a0<\/span>dreaded) Stamppot every day as it regularly featured as an afterschool dinner and was often made <\/span>with leftovers from previous dinners. They\u2019re eaten sweet and savoury and often served for dinner instead\u00a0<\/span>of breakfast, unlike other countries. While it’s not exclusive to The Netherlands, apple pie is really popular here. We do not claim to have invented<\/span>\u00a0this magnificent dessert staple, but evidence of Dutch apple pies goes back to the 1500s.\u00a0<\/span>Dutch apple pies often have crumbly streusel toppings while American apple pies use regular pie\u00a0<\/span>crust. We often add cinnamon, raisins and sometimes walnuts to our apple pie and serve it with <\/span>whipped cream or ice cream.
