We were recently voted as having the best accent in the world! You could be forgiven for mistaking a strong Scottish accent for a foreign language. Just like English, American and Canadian accents, our accents vary by region, making it hard to define a typical Scottish accent, besides the one you often hear on TV and in movies. Here are some of the characteristics of our unique dialect that may surprise you.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-history-of-the-scottish-accent\">The History of the Scottish Accent<\/h2>\n<p id=\"h-the-history-of-the-scottish-accentmany-of-the-words-most-commonly-used-in-modern-scotland-are-borrowed-from-scots-a-600-year-old-language-with-germanic-origins-that-also-borrows-from-gaelic-terminology-in-addition-to-our-very-distinct-pronunciation-grammar-and-expressions-scottish-english-has-a-distinctive-vocabulary-most-of-the-scottish-accents-that-you-may-hear-come-from-the-lowland-and-midland-areas-which-include-more-populated-regions-like-edinburgh-and-glasgow-while-we-are-speaking-our-own-version-of-english-some-of-the-words-vary-from-region-to-region-not-used-anywhere-else-in-the-world-for-example-in-glasgow-you-ll-hear-the-word-weans-and-in-edinburgh-you-ll-more-commonly-hear-bairns-both-meaning-small-children\">Many of the words most commonly used in modern Scotland are borrowed from Scots, a 600-year-old language with Germanic origins that also borrows from Gaelic terminology. In addition to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highlandtitles.com\/blog\/scottish-slang\/#Scottish_Sayings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">very distinct pronunciation, <\/a>grammar and expressions, Scottish English has a distinctive vocabulary. Most of the Scottish accents that you may hear come from the Lowland and Midland areas, which include more populated regions like Edinburgh and Glasgow. While we are speaking our own version of English, some of the words vary from region to region, not used anywhere else in the world. For example, in Glasgow you\u2019ll hear the word \u2018weans\u2019 and in Edinburgh you\u2019ll more commonly hear \u2018bairns\u2019 \u2013 both meaning small children.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-how-to-imitate-a-scottish-accent\">How to Imitate a Scottish Accent<\/h2>\n<p>While we like to think of our unique accent as inimitable, but we\u2019ll give you a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Talk-With-a-Scottish-Accent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> few tips<\/a> to make sure you have the basics right. We generally pronounce similar words the same. For example, the words pool and pull sound the same in a Glaswegian accent. Think of &#8220;u&#8221; sounds as \u2018oo\u2019 sounds. If there are two short words in a sentence, we\u2019ll often connect them, for example \u2018did not\u2019 often becomes \u2018didnae\u2019 or \u2018dinnae.\u2019 We also lazily drop the \u2018g\u2019 sound from words, for example \u2018playing\u2019 becomes \u2018playin\u2019\u2019. You\u2019ll also need to learn to roll your \u2018r\u2019s\u2019, especially in words like \u2018grand\u2019 and \u2018girl\u2019 although this is mainly attributed to the older generation.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-scottish-slang\">Scottish Slang<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to learn to speak like us, you\u2019ll have to get to grips with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottish-at-heart.com\/scottish-sayings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Scottish slang.<\/a> As well as shortening words and condensing the syllables as much as possible (e.g. \u2018I am not\u2019 becomes \u2018am no\u2019) we also use colloquialisms. Instead of saying \u2018go away\u2019, we would often say \u2018oan yer bike pal.\u2019 Another popular one, adopted by our Irish counterparts is \u2018up to high doh\u2019, meaning in a nervous or anxious state. A term of endearment used very commonly across Scotland is \u2018Hen\u2019. Not to be confused with our feathered friends, Hen refers to a young female and is used as a term of affection, much like sweetheart or honey is used elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-glaswegian-accent\">Glaswegian Accent<\/h2>\n<p id=\"h-actor-and-comedian-billy-connolly-helped-to-make-the-glaswegian-accent-famous-and-more-recognisable-around-the-world-while-it-shares-phrases-and-traits-of-other-variations-of-the-scottish-accent-it-is-instantly-recognisable-to-those-in-the-know-one-of-the-biggest-indicators-is-our-use-of-the-glottal-stop-in-layman-s-terms-we-drop-the-double-t-sound-in-the-middle-of-words-like-water-bottle-making-it-sound-like-wa-er-bo-le-glasgow-s-slang-is-different-to-the-rest-of-scotland-too-using-terms-unheard-of-elsewhere-like-swally-drink-heavy-raging-meaning-raging-mad-and-scunnered-meaning-tired-or-exhausted-there-are-of-course-much-more-familiar-and-insulting-terms-but-you-ll-have-to-learn-those-for-yourself\">Actor and comedian Billy Connolly, helped to make the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotsman.com\/whats-on\/arts-and-entertainment\/history-glasgow-accent-explained-1484472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Glaswegian accent famous <\/a>and more recognisable around the world. While it shares phrases and traits of other variations of the Scottish accent, it is instantly recognisable to those in the know. One of the biggest indicators is our use of the \u2018glottal stop\u2019; in layman\u2019s terms, we drop the double T sound in the middle of words like \u2018water bottle\u2019, making it sound like wa\u2019er bo\u2019le. Glasgow\u2019s slang is different to the rest of Scotland too, using terms unheard of elsewhere like swally (drink), heavy raging (meaning raging mad) and scunnered (meaning tired or exhausted).
